Miss Teen USA Winner Used Racial Slurs on Twitter

A new Miss Teen USA was crowned on Saturday night, and there's already a world of controversy surrounding the beauty pageant.

First, the competition came under fire for a lack of diversity, after the five finalists all shared a certain look. The quintet were all white with blonde hair and blue eyes, which prompted Twitter to go into meltdown mode insisting that the five women were impossible to tell apart.

The highest profile critic was supermodel Chrissy Teigen, who joked on Twitter about the finalists, "Wow how can we choose from such a diverse bunch."

But the lack of diversity critique was just the tip of the iceberg. It soon came to light that the eventual winner, 18-year-old Karlie Hay from Texas, had a nasty habit of using the n-word on social media.

Karlie has since deleted the offensive tweets, but not before several people had screen-grabbed her casually using the racial slur over and over again in posts from 2013 and 2014. The pageant winner has since issued an apology on Twitter.

"Several years ago, I had many personal struggles and found myself in a place that is not representative of who I am as a person," she tweets. "I admit that I have used language publicly in the past which I am not proud of and that there is no excuse for."

"Through hard work, education and thanks in large part to the sisterhood that I have come to know through pageants, I am proud to say that I am today a better person," she continues.

"I am honored to hold this title and I will use this platform to promote the values of the Miss Universe Organization, and my own, that recognize the confidence, beauty and perseverance of all women."

We're guessing this is going to be a pretty interesting reign for this Miss Teen USA, to say the least.
